    Kick *** Quilts

    Hey everybody,

Well I've been hanging for about six months now, and finally got sick of my nightly wrestling match with my pad, and decided to switch to an underquilt. The underquilts at JRB look awesome, but being a poor college student, I'm not sure if I can afford them. So then I looked at Kick *** Quilts, and stumbled across their quilt instructions. Has anyone made one of these underquilts? I have done other hammock sewing projects, and it didn't too complicated. I'd appreciate input from anyone who made one, tips or problems they ran into. Thanks for the help.

blackbishop will respond as soon as he sees your post. making a synthetic under quilt is fairly easy, but they are less expensive to purchase too if you just want to buy one.

blackbishop is now making and selling those quilts. He would be the man to ask.

I haven't made one yet either. I made a couple down ones with DIY instructions coming soon. I think that for around $100 you can make a potamic. For around $120-140 you can make a down one.

If you have sewn anything before, it shouldn't be too hard. If not, I would try some smaller projects first.

It'll cost you $100-$120 in materials to make a Potomac, depending on what you want to use. If you can find some Polarguard insulation, you can get the cost a little lower - but good luck on that It should take you around 9-10 hours, since you've got some sewing experience. And of course I'd be happy to make one for you if you'd rather go that route!

That price on the down quilt sounds a little optimistic, man...sure you're not figuring that based on your bulk down price? I remember pricing one awhile back and it came out more like $160-$180. Maybe I'm just misremembering.

I made a Potomac type this winter using the KAQ DIY plans. I used a double thickness of Climashield and what appears to be silnylon from the Wally World dollar bin. Total cost was about $ 92. AYCE from ThruHiker provides great service and everything was available on the his website. Sewing is tedious and the slippery material needs to be pinned a lot, but it's not bad once you get the hang of it. Took several weekends to complete.

It fits my HH BULA well and keeps me warm to about 20 degrees. Would I do it again? I would buy an underquilt in a heartbeat. I'm not sure it was worth the savings to make it myself once the time investment is factored in.

Isn't Climashield about $11 a yard (60" wide)? I still don't see how it would cost that much if you only did two layers. I must be missing something.

    I'll give you that.

    12oz down = $100
    5 yds ripstop retail ~ $30
    2 yds noseeum ~$6
    misc ~ $20

    I'll give you $160.

    $11 x 5yds = $55
    5 yds sil x $1 a yds at walmart = $5

The rest in notions and thread. The $1 a yds fabric is the real money saver.
