    April on the AT

Last weekend I took my mom and three good friends on a section hike if the AT in southern Massachusetts. We had, or saw evidence of, almost every type of weather available. We had rain, snow, sleet, hail and sun. On the trail we saw evidence of microbursts and a tornado that went through ten years ago. It was amazing to see.

The purple people eater and purple palace has their inaugural run in the ruins of a Shaker barn. Here are a few pictures. Hope you enjoy.

A farm near the trail head.

The shaker campsite. The wall in the back is part of the old barn. We actually camped out in the foundation.

    My new set up.

Jackson tent. He stayed there until midnight when he got too cold, or lonely.

    My moms new WBBB

My friend Shelly slept in my HH exped.

We met a dad and two boys in HH too!

Then we met a thru hiker finishing the AT from NY where he left off ten years ago. He was in an ENO. My biggest surprise was that I had made the assumption that everyone with hammocks was on hammock forums. But when I started talking gear it was obvious that they weren't. They didn't know what Dutch gear was!!

My other two friends were in tents. I did my best to convert them.

For dinner we had steak, baked potatoes, salad and sour dough bread. Yummy!

The next day we were off the the South Wilcox shelter. Only 6 miles away, but since we were a bunch of giggly girls who like to take pictures it took us all day! We saw porcupine sign everywhere in the first mile.

We stop for lunch in a blizzard! And met another hiker headed for Maine.

Love the doggie tent. Curious about it. We take our dog on canoe trips and she sleeps under the hammocks, this might give her some options.

    April on the AT

Suddenly the trail opened up and we saw our first microburst sign.

Just past that I noticed one of the hemlocks had interesting growth around dead limbs. I decided to hit it with my knife and discovered some 'fat wood'.

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1366213183.914739.jpg

It didn't work as well as I thought it wood but it sure was pretty.

In the middle of the trail we found scattered deer fur. Not sure what happened. No bones in the area

Second microburst covered the ground with spruce bows.

My mom taking a rest with two pooped out puppies.

Using my new tarp as a wall.

Second nights dinner. Chicken and barley soup with peas. All from dehydrated ingredients. Really yummy and filling!

While my trail mates took to the bunks and loft, I opted for a more comfortable bed.

Jackson got cold around 4am and joined me.

    April on the AT

Stopped for lunch on the way out and our 20min stop turned into almost an hour.

The tornado site. This area was completely wiped flat ten years ago.

Jackson was very happy to find the truck!

It was mostly because he has such little fur that he needed it to stay warm. It was hard to get just right because it needed to be directly under the ridge line for the tent to be taught. He liked it though. It was just too cold for him at 32*.

Wow very cool! Looks like a great time. I'm impressed you got your mom out there, on a multi-day trip no less! I just got my wife out on her first overnight and that was like pulling teeth... Until I told her we had to stop at the liquor store for wine.

Dog tent is cool, but I'm interested in what exactly happens when your dog wants to crawl into the hammock with you! Because I know that's exactly what mine would want to do if I let her.
