It just takes experimenting to get the right pad position and how to get in to the hammock. I lay diagonally and put the pad the same way, and I find this out by getting in and out and in and out of the hammock. I'm still learning too. Every time I hang the hammock it goes up different, I get comfortable very easily, cold spots can be leviated by tucking one of my poncho liners around that area.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. - E. B. White (1899 - 1985)

In my experience, it's not enough to keep the pad from moving. It might be due to the fact that I use smaller pads?!

And I apologize for asking the obvious question, but sometimes ya just need to ask them. I wasn't trying to imply anything!

I used a Wally blue pad in mine with a SPE. It worked pretty good.

How about making a kind of segmented pad extender (SPE) ? You can search the forums and see how to do it properly, but this is the simplest ( a bit Sanford and Son-ish, as someone said in another post..;-):

Buy two pads. Cut one in half lengthwise and add sides to the first one using duct tape, so the sides can fold up into a u-shape around you to avoid shoulder-cold-spots. Then shape the pad, trimming to fit, wide at shoulders, narrow at feet. It won't move around because it's not too small.

I did this with a very thin pad ( 5/16" = .76 cm ) for summer nights. It's hard to fold and bulky when rolled, but it does the job.

Step two will be to see if i can put a thicker one under that one for fall.

Great tip! I started out using my synthetic sleeping bag, but is was to heavy and bulky so I switched to a fleece blanket in stead.

No need to apologize at all... It'll take more to annoy me, than perfectly good questions

I've heard that even the best makes mistakes, so I'm still waiting to screw up

You can also cut a pad to make wings that just lay in a "T" shape. My Son did this and it worked pretty good for him.

I bought a wally world blue pad, cut it in half, and sewed it back together to make it 40x36 rather than 72x20. It makes a nice, wide U shape that I figured would be perfect in a hammock. But I just tried it out in my ENO, and everything was going great until I sat down in it. The pad folded in every direction possible and it was impossible for it to not fold underneath me every which way. I hate pads. Hurry up, money. I want a CrowsNest!!

Yeah, one that wide you'll have to cut darts in it.
