    Shape of a Thunderbird

Hello fellow board members. Im a tad new to the hanging scene and was wondering what shape the material is. Is it a rectangle or is there some degrees involved?

I was just wondering because my son says his hammock feels different from my TBird but both are same size.

    Thanks

It's just a rectangle with gathered ends.

What kind of hammock does your son have?

My son has a new 11' Netty from Hammeck. Dang nice hammock but it does feel different. Maybe it will break in a bit. If they do.

With very few exceptions (like the Streamliner hammock), pretty much all hammocks are made of a rectangular piece of fabric. The difference in lay can have lots of causes:

    • the length of the hammock body (in relation to user body size)
    • the width to some part, too
    • the type of ending (whipped end, channel end, a mix of whipped and channel end, folded end...)
    • the length of the ridgeline in relation to the length of the hammock body (= more or less sag)
    • the type of fabric (poly is usually firmer, nylon is stretchier)
    • the weight of the fabric (lighter is stretchier, heavier is firmer)
    • possibly the way the top cover or mosquito netting is cut (it holds the hammock body up differently)

I probably forgot some factors. This is why hammocks by different makers vary so much - and why you should own more than one hammock

Yeah i think size of the person has all to do with the lay, as does the angle of the suspension and tightness of the ridgeline. Im about 6'1 170 lbs and have a 11 ft dangerbird 60 " wide... i max it out on the width to get a flat lay. Bigger boys need bigger hammocks to get the same or similar lay.

i think so. it just looks diferent due to tie out placement, and shape of the netting.
