I went on a campout with the troop last weekend to a place with limited tree access, so I built this simple hammock stand from 2x3 lumber and 3/8" bolts. I suspend one end of the hammock from the truck and the other from a simple A-frame. In between the two I put two 2x3s bolted together to make a long bridge. All this bridge does is transfer the horizontal load from the A-frame to the truck, so it is in compression all the time and is not under much load. Anyway, it worked great and I was able to have two pleasant (if chilly) nights above ground. Here are a few pics.
