I like to hang low enough for morning coffee and high enough to sit, but really the terrain dictates hight. Lots of undergrowth high up. clear ground, hang lower.
I thought I was wrong once, turns out I was wrong about that.
I am pretty much the same as the other posters that like to use their hammocks as chairs. I will hang it about a foot (sometimes less) off of the ground. I will pitch it as low as I can if I want to get the most wind break out of my tarp. I also pitched low during the winter so I could close both ends of my Speer Winter Tarp. Worked great. There was still enough air movement to keep condensation from being a problem.
I pitch low but I thought that was because I'm 5 foot tall and I can't really get the straps up very high on the trees. You guys that are pitching low, how high up are you tieing off the straps???

I have to work at pitching mine low. Partly because it is important to me that I be able to get out eaisly. But If I am pitching normal I am usually just above my head. If low... maybe around neck height. The low pitch is a rarity for me so I would have to think about it carefully.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

The position of the straps is determined by the angle of the pitch and the height you want the hammock. I am 6"1' so I do not normally have and issue with getting my straps high enough. I also like my trees as close together as I can get away with most times. That might be just me though.
I like my hammock about butt high off the ground. Works for me, good height to get in without giving too much effort to get out or answer the call of nature.
