    Marking sil

I'm sure all you smart folks out there already know this trick, but it's new to me.

I've had terrible luck being able to mark sil with anything but the paint pens. Well, my paint pen died last night and I had some work to finish. I remembered a white-out pen I had in my desk and grabbed it. It works great and is cheaper than the paint pens (cause I get them free from work )! Bright white and easy to see; it sticks well enough that it doesn't get rubbed off as I'm moving material around the machine and it comes off with very light scratching of the fingernail.

Anyhow, maybe I helped somebody just starting to work with sil, or maybe not. Either way I'm happy.

What I would really like to know is how you keep it from sliding all over the place while sewing?
I made my quilt cover out of some silk I bought and could not keep the edges together while I sewed (even though pined) and it kept sliding off my table.
I hate to think what it must be like with sil

A walking foot REALLY helps with that.
Before using one of these I would end up with one piece longer than the other after sewing the length of the quilt.

I just checked, and "tailors chalk" will mark on sil... I dont know if regular chalkboard chalk will work, I think they are a different composition...?

NCP, you need me to send you a piece of chalk too?

glue stick works the best on sil to keep edges together, you can get it from walmart, and it's water soluble.

exactly, i sometimes use pins, but for most seams and hems i use glue stick for sil and wonder tape for breathable fabrics. sometimes if it's just a simple rolled hem, i don't use anything.

    Wonder tape?

Where does it hide in the superstore?

    Tailor's chalk?

Wally's world or some speciality place?

I've found that pulling the sewed fabric with a gentle tension and pinching the unsewed with a gentle tension holds it together for the most part. The stretchy stuff is what drives me nuts.

Tailors chalk is in the sewing section of WM or and hobby/sewing store. its not in a stick style like regular chalk, its a flat rectangle and usually is packaged with a white and a blue one in one pkg. only a couple $$ at WM.
