    Marking Ripstop

    Hey Y'all,

Santa was good to me and brought me some 1.1 oz ripstop to make a TQ and a UQ. I began cutting fabric today at lunchtime andf was unable to find anything that would make a decent line on the material (pretty much had to settle for a crease). A pencil didn't work and neither did a Sharpie. I had the best luck with a ball point pen but even that didn't work overly well.

Any suggestions for somethign that will leave a decent (meaning visible) line?

    Thanks,

    Steve D

I've used a fresh Sharpie marker. worked very good for me, except it is there in spots you may not have intended it to be seen after final project.
No matter on my DIY's as its for ME.

I have used one of the white fabric marking pencils with good results. Similar to this.

If you are marking straight lines, consider using blue masking tape or Scotch Tape. It holds the fabric kind of rigid and makes it easier to cut and keeps it from stretching when you sew it.

+1 on using tape to mark things....unless you are using silnylon! Tape won't stick at all to that! (trust me on this )

I did a tarp once, had some long lines, flipped a blue chalk line. Worked well.

Try laying it out on a hard floor. Tape all the way across, sticking the tape to the floor on each side. The tape will grip to the silnylon enough to allow cutting without slip. Then slide your cutting mat underneath and cut it with a rotary knife. Works great.

I started with marking the measurements with tape and before cutting I drew the cutting line with a ballpoint pen. Still using tape to mark measurements on the fabric but for the initial line I use blackboard chalk. A lot easier to see the line with darker fabrics. Next I will be trying tape+tailor's chalk. The tape is just regular clear tape and I mark all the tapes with a marker, so it's easier to spot them. You can also write down measurements on the tape so it's very easy to know which is which. Usually when marking down the measurements on the fabric I use the following: tape, a pen, chalk, 59" measuring tape and also 12" and 24" metal rulers for the cutting lines.
