I've done that, and the IX tends to grab stuff very easily. If you keep it in the bag, except to use it as an insert, you really don't need any layers... raw IX will work just fine!

I can't wait to get my hands on a few odd pieces of IX, and "shingle" them in between the layers of my Traveler.

That will work very well... be thinking of how to keep the IX in place.
