Unless by "reduce" you mean taking the rating numerically down from 20 to 18, then yes, in that sense you are reducing the rating by increasing the insulation properties...

Got it now (told you I was brain dead).
Let me move on.
So if 2) is true, then it may be more beneficial to overstuff an underquilt rather than a topquilt, as the underquilt may be more subject to windage than a topquilt (which is more likely to be semi-sheltered within the hammock.
Again, right?

That does stand to reason, and it's my thinking as well. My field-use observations of overstuff quilts all relate to underquilts.
That's not to say that overstuffing a top quilt would have no effect, because it will indeed increase the density of insulation and thus warmth. But if you choose to put extra dollars into choosing to overstuff only one, then the underquilt is the logical choice.

Thanks for the input on that one. It makes more sense to me now.
If ever I get a different winter/3 season UQ, I may end up going with some more overstuff.

don't quote me but I could've swore somewhere around here I saw you get about 5 degrees for every ounce of overstuff on 900fp down. Again, I'm pulling from memory from way back but that should be a close ballpark.
