    2) theoretically provide better draft protection (from a breeze)
    3) possibly reduce the rating of the quilt by maybe 1° or 2°

Is that right? Keep the answer simple.
    1 - Yes
    2 - Yes. It's more than theory.
3 - No. It will increase the insulation properties, and give a 'better' rating.

Unless by "reduce" you mean taking the rating numerically down from 20 to 18, then yes, in that sense you are reducing the rating by increasing the insulation properties...

    Allow me to rephrase
    3) It will allow change the rating by a degree to two lower (eg, better 'rating') from say 20° to maybe somewhere around 18° or 19°ish?

That depends on how much % of overstuff is added. Often you get more improvement than that.

Got it now (told you I was brain dead).

    Let me move on.
So if 2) is true, then it may be more beneficial to overstuff an underquilt rather than a topquilt, as the underquilt may be more subject to windage than a topquilt (which is more likely to be semi-sheltered within the hammock.

    Again, right?

That does stand to reason, and it's my thinking as well. My field-use observations of overstuff quilts all relate to underquilts.

That's not to say that overstuffing a top quilt would have no effect, because it will indeed increase the density of insulation and thus warmth. But if you choose to put extra dollars into choosing to overstuff only one, then the underquilt is the logical choice.

Thanks for the input on that one. It makes more sense to me now.

If ever I get a different winter/3 season UQ, I may end up going with some more overstuff.

So lets use the UQ that I ordered as an example. 0* Phoenix with CF and 2 oz overstuffed. What would be the possible increase to the temp ratings? I understand that it would be subjective to the user but hypothetically speaking how would that change things?

You should ask Stormcrow. I wouldn't presume to state ratings for him.

don't quote me but I could've swore somewhere around here I saw you get about 5 degrees for every ounce of overstuff on 900fp down. Again, I'm pulling from memory from way back but that should be a close ballpark.
