I've got 4 yards of Ripstop and no sewing machine. Can I sheet bend or whip without hemming? I'm more concerned about the sides than I am about the ends. This will only be used in the house.

Without the hems the sides where you get in and out may rip. I don't know if that will matter with rip-stop. If he doesn't post I'd PM ramblinrev he'd know for sure.

On the ends I would suggest you heat seal the edges to keep them from raveling.
Depending on you level of trust in the fabric... in your case you might want to stop by a sewing store and get some heat set seam tape. I think they make it in various widths but 1/2" would be fine. You fold and iron the seam tape. Be warned though, the heat seal tape is not as durable and washable as a good sewn seam. If you aren't going to wash it frequently you will probably find it reliable. _IF_ you use the seam tape do _not_ make a channel with the intention of hanging from the channel. I would not trust the tape. But for a larkshead kind of suspension attachment that should be good.

Just put a double layer together that way to play with. I'd heat seal the edges at minimum.
Don't heat seal the selvage edge. That's the woven part that runs the length of the fabric. Thats all woven together, if you heat seal that you will break the weaving which is stronger than the sealed edge would be. Just heat seal the ends.

They make two types of heat seal seam tape. One (thick) cannot be sewn through, the thin kind can. It is labelled sew though. It is strong enough to hold for a while, and works well on DWR coatings. Later, when you have a machine, or find someone who does, it can be sewn. You can cut the tape into strips, it may not be necessary to tape the entire long edge of the hammock. I go every two inches or so, but then I sew it.
An emergency of my own making...is still an emergency.
Why not take it to a local alterations shop and as them what they would charge to put a hem along the seam?
If you lived just a bit closer I'd do it for you.
I do go to O-town quite a bit.......... Hmmm!

Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
I used a unsewn hammock for around two months straight to see how it'd fair. It did fine. I did the sheet bend (after the standard "w" fold). Did nothing as far as heat seal or anything, since the sheet bend grabs the fabric farther down from the cut ends.
You and I are around the same weight, so it should work...exception being not all fabric is edged the same, so that will be determined by you.
I ended up sewing hems all around and finishing it. I got tired of the paranoia every night thinking"RIPPPP"
prior to sitting down in it.
For peace of mind (priceless), have it sewn, you'll sleep better.
