Negative Aspects of Hammock Camping?

These friends of mine most definitely are NOT bums, they're awesome people with many, many years of experience in the outdoors, and hundreds upon hundreds of trail miles under their belts.

1. Bit of a learning curve.
2. Ended up spending more $s than I thought I would.
3. Related to #1 & 2. Someone is always coming up with an improvement in
system/technique or gear.
4. Usually need two suitable trees.

The dog seems to like going camping with me, but he won't stay in a hammock. If he was tied out under the tarp he'd bark at any moving thing, where for whatever reason if in a tent with me he'll be quiet all night. So I choose hammock or dog but not both.

Privacy in a busy campground for changing clothes and such can be a problem. I picked up one of these just for this reason, only useful for car camping but then that's the only place I'm likely to need it.

Heh, sorry about the rant. I feel better after a good night's sleep.

One negative is having "that dream" where something is trying to bite you through the bottom of your hammock and you not 100% certain it was a dream so you have to try to stay awake, to see ....but the you nod off and it happens again but your not 100% sure that you did actually nod off so you try to stay awake some more and... ...and... ...and....

That doesn't happen in a tent!

That's so true! I don't know how many times I thought something was under my hammock in the middle of the night...

To tell the truth, there are no negative aspects of hammocking. That's right, none. If you hear any, they were fabricated by jealous ground dwellers just trying to keep us hangers down.

I have that 'dream' at least once a night. When the dog has to pee she nudges me from below the hammock. She's a bulldog with a massive underbite, so when I get nudged, it's all teeth doing the nudging.
