Knotty's Gathered End Hammock Mod Question

If I wanted to modify Knotty's Gathered End Hammock into a more asymmetrical design like pictured below, do you feel it would still work well and be safe? There is a lot of fabric on the sides when I lay diagonal. I would like to be able to see what is being blocked by the "wall" of fabric and cut down on some weight.

Knotty posted a solution that I think involved a side channel. I will try to post the link later if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Well, I cut it and went for a hang in it. It did not work. The fabric that was cut away supported the head and feet from the other end. I am going to attempt to repair it, but this mistake may have just cost me $20.

    Yes, with some qualifications:
    (1) Don't skimp on the length. Make it at least 10' long, and longer than that if you're taller than I am (5' 7").
    (2) Be prepared to do some creative whipping of the ends, perhaps pulling the corners out to tighten the edges if they're floppy. As an alternative, put channels in the sides so you can run bungees in them (1/8" is good).

I'm glad you're doing this. Please give us a report when you're done.

Sorry it didn't work. I did a similar mod to my first insulated hammocks, but I replaced the cut away fabric with small spectra lines that were adjustable.

I am thinking about the lines. I may try that and see if that works. If not, I'm going to need to buy some more fabric.

Give yourself credit for trying something different, FireInMyBones! There's nothing wrong with that (as long as you use cheap fabric )

And you learned something - nothing wrong with that either.

    Yeah.

I may have found some lighter weight fabric on ebay in the color I wanted. I put in my best offer. I hope I win.

This time, however, I may make it a little less wide: 4.25'-4.5' instead of 5'. I'll probably shorten it from 10' to 9.5'. I am only 5'7" and 160lbs. This could save weight and have less of a fabric wall. It will also be a little closer to the GT Nano 7 I keep hearing about. Everyone says 4'x9' is too small and something a bit wider and longer would be more comfortable...only one way to find out.

Several people have had success with cutting the sides with a cat curve to them to open up the views. Of course the down side to this is that while the sides are more taught and make it easier to see all around the TQ can slide out easier as well.

Perhaps melding your idea and cat cutting the sides together would work better. An Asym Cat cut perhaps?
