    Most expensive kit index

Reading the hammock index thread and mentally adding the probable cost in just hammocks, I was wondering whether we could get people to 'fess up about the cost of this addiction.

So, how ab posting the total US dollar amount for your most expensive kit. Only include hammocks, tarps, UQs TQs, and anything that would be taken on one backpacking trip Tacos, burritos, pea pods acceptable. Trying to get it so we can compare apples with apples. Can add cost of a pack as a separate item since not everyone backpacks. Pl give description (make/model).

Mmmmmm what ab what it cost new and what you paid for it used? Oh, well this is just for fun.

(will start another thread for the cheapest set-up so the DIYers can gloat.)

Sure I could, but that just might take some of the fun out of it. How much do you have in your house, does it make sense, in a lot of cases no. Improvements, additions, painting, fencing, landscaping, jeez the landscaping!, pools, new flooring, remodeling bathrooms, kitchens....mtg. inteerest, insurance, argh!

It's hard to put a justifyable price on comfort, especially when it involves recreation.

    It is what it is....

I'm kind of upset that you forced me to look at this. TQ/UQ Hammock and Tarp almost a grand. How did that happen? Oh that's right, I joined this forum. Please don't make add up the price of all of my gear.

Well my gear is entirely DIY so I'd have to guesstimate:

    • Hammock: $20
    • Tarp: $50
    • UQ: $50
    • TQ: $50

Cost estimates include all lines and hardware used as well. I buy fabric on sale with a coupon normally, and I buy enough for several projects. I harvested the down for my quilts from a pillow I got off eBay for $30 a couple years back.

lol, if the misses had any clue how much I had wrapped up in hammocking she would probably leave me. There is no way I'm going to document the dollar amounts on a public form. And if by chance she does leave me, last thing I want to do is save her some time adding up my assets .

Hennessy Hammock ULB-A was $125 10 years ago,
JRB Underquilt was about $250 back then,
OES McCat Standard Tarp was $95 when my wife bought it for me,
Western Mountaineering Caribou (35* sleeping bag) was $300.
Still using 2x carabineers to tie off to. They were $8 each back when I bought them.
Had the Zipper Queen do some mods... 'bout $100, iirc.

So that's $886. Replacement cost is probably over $1000.

    +1

Warning: I suspect this is thread is part of some nefarious plot by an irate group of wives/husbands to obtain actual retain costs of our hammocking addiction with the intent of using that knowledge to blackmail hardworking Hammock Forum members with the threat of divulging said information to our spouses!

You guys need to take up cycling. All my hammock gear added together won't purchase a serious starting grade bicycle. Just tell your spouses that the hammock hobby is cheaper than biking. Wait until she finds out I plan on bike trekking. Guaranteed that I'm not going to take it with me!

About 800 for the current hammock setup I have. That is not counting the backpack and other extras.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.
