    Question about restrictions...

The other day someone said some "park rangers" and such get upset about hanging because it damages the trees. I plan to hang in many different places but I've been going to the smokey mtns my whole life. My question is do they restrict you from hanging say in "Elkmont"? As many times as I've been there I don't think I've ever seen a hammock. Only tents and rv's. Also what about state parks in TN and Ms. Mainly I'm talking about campgrounds that you would pull an rv too.

The GSMNP and TN State Parks have no restrictions I'm aware of. Use your straps and if questioned, seek to educate rather than defend. Most campgrounds are set up for RVs and tents, so you may be limited to setting up over the tent pad. This makes sense in high use areas to limit soil compaction which leads to erosion. A Turtledog stand would be just the trick for these situations.

I camp at Smokemont , not far from Elkmont, several times a year and have always used a hammock. I would think Elkmont would be the same but have not camped there yet.
Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

I saw a thread about restrictions on hammock on the AT in the Smokies (thread located here), but I've not heard anything about the rest of the park.

Admittedly, it's not something I've researched thoroughly; I don't plan on being in that park any time soon.
