    Afton, MN

Got a question for you Minnesota hangers. I've only camped at Afton once, and it was the end of winter. The ski slopes were still active, so it was pretty noisy all night. How is it in the summer time in terms of use? Busy trails? Firewood? Noise? Just working on an overnight trip with a friend and we're trying to decide where to go. Right now it's either Afton or Lake Maria. What do you think?

Both parks are really busy until after Labor Day. The reservable sites are usually always fully reserved on weekends in the summer. Lake Maria is definitely a quieter park and I like it much better than Afton.

Afton: Noise hasn't been a problem when I've been out there during the summer. Firewood is something like $4 all you can cut. There's a big pile of basically rough cut boards by the pump. There's a saw there too, you have to cut wood to reasonable lengths.

I prefer Afton over lake Maria because of the bugs alone. In the summer it's plenty quiet.

Thanks for the replies. I figured Lake Maria was more buggy, but they don't really bother me much. Skeeters don't like my flavor, I guess. My buddy might get chewed up, though. Do you find the bugs are bad pretty much everywhere on the Lake Maria trails or just near the lakes and low lands?

It's getting to the end of bug season now and it's been pretty dry lately with grass getting crunchy. Don't think they'll be much of an issue.
