    Why not Becket?

Okay – I’ve read the Ultimate Hang, watched Shug’s excellent suspension videos, and done some searching here.

At the risk of asking a dumb question and/or broaching a controversial topic, why not just use a Becket hitch every time? The webbing is already there, it’s less moving parts, and it’s a quick-release knot. Maybe a better built-in drip line too? Is it a weight issue with being able to bring less webbing with other methods? For sure cinch buckles seem to use the same amount of webbing. Still learning...

p.s. It turns out I have been using that knot for awhile under a different name for joining small lengths of rope together, etc.

I do use a Becket Hitch. If I wasn't using kevlar straps, I'd probably use some kind of Dutch Hardware, but their too slippery with the kevlar straps. BH works fine for me. I think all of the bending and pressure of BH might cause webbing to to wear faster, if I remember correctly.

A lot of us do use the becket hitch. You do see prevalent use of hardware though. Some people don't want to fiddle with knots or prefer the simplicity of hardware.

Thousands of ways to suspend your hammock. Some ways are faster, and some cost less, weight and bulk can be factors, some parts can be lost—while others are all-in-one making it unlikely to lose small parts. Some hammock campers have to break camp in freezing rain while battling arthritis. Sometimes our kids need a simple easy way to hang their rig. And some of us are obsessed with knots.
I wonder who that could be—-hahalol
While others get a charge out of all things mechanical.

Some of us change suspensions depending on the trip—-or what videos we’ve watched lately.
Mostly everybody uses what we got.

Your becket hitch suspension is used by lots of hammockers. Somewhere here on Hammock Forums I’ve described a few ways to prevent becket hitch from slipping.

Becket is good and a perfect choice for those that prefer pure.
For me, I prefer to make small adjustments in my hammock suspension for my ultimate sweet spot without tying and untying a knot in my suspension.

I've recently began using whoopies; but instead of a marlin spike, I larkshead a soft shackle to the webbing. That way I can slide it up or down the webbing as I like it, then secure it with a Becket Hitch over the soft shackle. The whoopie sling just runs through the soft shackle, and I'm done.

I was thinking this would also work great with only webbing and the CLs. Just hook the CL in the soft shackle, then slide the shackle up or down the webbing to the desired hang, and finish it off with the Becket hitch. With just the webbing/CLs, and Becket Hitch, you always lose a couple inches when you tie the knot. But with the soft shackle larksheaded to the webbing, there is enough friction to hold your hammock exactly where you want it while you tie the Becket Hitch.

I use a slippery becket hitch, though I learned it as a 'slippery sheet bend'.

Been using it for years now - Love It -

May or may not be superior in regards to water break/built in drip line... I still keep a small drip line attached past the hitch'n spot/closer to my hammock (I use a sm. dog bone instead of a sm. continuous loop). Two water breaks better than one? Yes of course..

I love the Becket. It is my favorite way to hang now with Dyneema straps.

Do you have any pictures of your setup?

I don't have a pic of it hanging, but here's a close up of the soft shackle attached to the webbing. All you need to do after everything is set where you want it is to tie the Becket Hitch to the soft shackle (just like you would normally do with the CL).
