    Hennessy Tightness

    Howdy everyone,

I received my Hennessy yesterday and had a good time setting it up. It was a lot easier than I expected. I do have one question though. When the hammock is in the snake skins and I'm attaching it to the tree huggers how tight should it be? Should I pull each side equally until the hammock makes a straight line between each tree and is parallel to the ground or should I have it sagging a bit? Just curious.

Hey- I just got mine a few months ago too... I set it up every weekend. Though not new to backpacking, certainly new to hanging. But I think I have the hang of it now.

From everything I've seen in videos here, and from my progression in confidence with setting it up, it should have little sag to it when hung, and still in the snake skins (****, I love those things!). When I get in it, I get around that spec'd 30 degrees...

My first hang was really loose. I was cautious about over tightening it. I wasn't even close. Each progressive time I set it up, I snugged it up more and more until I got to the point I mentioned above.

    This is way too loose.

Getting it it at this point put me foot or so above the ground. Though I should note that the span v height of the slings doesn't seem ideal either. It was still comfy though!

I didn't take any pictures of my next set up, but it was almost perpendicular to the ground (just a little sag to it).

Anyway- I hope I'm not wrong about my advice, but it seems to work quite well.

When I used snake skins, I'd put the hammock up loosely at first, with a lot of sag, then take the skins off and adjust the height of the hammock accordingly.

I have found that when in tye snake skins the hammock needs to be pretty tight. Once the skins come off it hangs more.

Adjust until you learn what produces about a 30° suspension angle (from horizontal) when the hammock is loaded.

Hold your hand out, palm towards you, thumb straight up, fingers extended together horizontally. The line from the top of your thumb to the tip of your pointer finger is approx. 30°.

Hmmm, never occurred to me to try to hang my Hennessy with the snakeskins on. Maybe I didn't read the instructions. I always just did half hitches on the rope suspension to see the height off the ground before I did the Hennessy figure 8. Worked for me and I rarely had to readjust. I switched to whoopies and no longer have to deal with those ropes.

Dejoha's Hammock Hang Calculator should help you visualize:

If you still can't get it through your head, Dutch sells the Hangle which will help even the thickest among us.

Well you know what a 90* angle is right. Half of that is 45* and half of that is 22.5* so if you keep it between 45* and 22.5*, you should be ok.

Also I have found that in my HH Explorer, when hanging in the hammock, if I can't grab the ridge line and almost fold it over my hand then my hammock suspension is too tight. Basically if your ridge line is so taught that you cant grab it and fold at least half way then you need to loosen it or basically let it sag alittle more. Hope that makes sense. Hard to describe.

Thanks everyone for the response. I think I have a pretty good idea on it now.

This helps a lot. When I hung in it yesterday I did a little ridge line test like what you described and it was very, very tight. Almost like a guitar string.
