Ugh being a martial artist for 14 yrs it pains me to think you would cut down a bo staff. You can get a jo staff 4' or 5' length and not tapered and save the butcher job.

I found some cheap hiking staffs ... some Asian wood species ... on Amazon.com that I carved wood spirits on them. They came with a rubber tip that when removed had a metal spike ... they work pretty well and made nice gifts to a couple of my hiking pals.

I could never understand why someone would want a staff made out of a heavy wood like oak or hickory. I'll stick to popular or cedar...strong and light weight.
Of course, I really prefer hiking poles.
I haven't been to my local martial arts store in a bit but hoping to find a nice rattan staff, that should do the trick, and depending on the length I might get away without cutting the wood. Add a rubber cap from the local pharmacy cane supply section and hopefully I'm good to go.
