I'm seasoned myself but certainly felt like an idiot last fall when I climbed into my under quilt (UQ) instead of the hammock body. I wound up flat on my back with a busted UQ suspension for my moment of inattention. It happens.

On my last tripp I was looking for a dead standing to use for fire wood. Found obne that had fallen over but was supported by another tree, and bone dry. Reached up to pull it down, and I had barely touched it when it thumped to the ground. I had walked under it on the way in....

Last spring on our Florida Hike & Hang one of the 2 trees I wanted to hang on was dead, so in my infinate wisdom it seemed that the best thing to do would be to cut the top out of the dead tree. Said and done but it wouldn't fall, OK, threw a length of mule tape over the upper branches and laid into to it with my 220# and the whole d. a. m. n. top came down on me. Managed to survive with just a few scratches and this is the first time this experience has been revealed. But tying off to a tree top .and trying to pull it over on yourself is not recommended

    Dont feel bad

I think it was last year, a couple hanging, tree falls man is killed. All outward signs was that the tree was perfectly healthy.
We roll the dice, walking out the door, driving to the TH and in choosing trees.

Believe you nailed it MM. Every day we get out of the hammock/bed is a gamble.

    Considering where I work

and how we see people 'go' here, getting my ticket punched by a huge oak would be most preferrable!
Last fall in the Smokies while paddle camping Poof had a 'slider'=every time she'd sit in the hammock it'd go down--the tree was slowly uprooting...took us a bit to figure what was slipping thinking the suspension at first. I went over and gave it a push and down it went.
I'm sitting here fantasizing about my next gamble!

    I Did a Full Flip

I have thousands of nights sleeping in my hammocks. About 2 weeks ago, after a really bad day, I started to go to bed. I sat in my hammock and thought I was sitting on the edge. I leaned back and did a complete flip. Knocked the dang wind out of me and almost knocked myself out.

It can happen to the best of us. I'm just glad it happened in my room and not of the side of a mountain or this story might never have been told.
