Unhappy I did a whoops this past weekend :(

It was very windy where I set up camp so I put my tarp lower than usual to block the wind....well I sat to far on edge of hammock and the spreader bars swung outward and one tore right through my $160 Big Mamajamba tarp . I literally was not a happy camper.

Its the most comfortable hammock I've ever had and I have had a few. But man I didn't see that coming. Its patched. I just need pointers on the best way to pitch the tarp to keep this from happening again. If it was a less of a windy day (also looked as if it might rain) I would have pitched tarp higher to avoid this from happening.

So true The smell of the pine in the air and the running water nearby helped me calm down real quick.

sorry that this happened to you but your accident can help others. Now to remind the gf not to do this

Exactly why I posted this. I think by having side pullouts on the tarp will alleviate the spreader bar issue.

Is there a burr or something on the spreader to do this?

Was the tarp already touching the spreader prior to you getting in?

This is the first I have heard of this happening!

How hard did you sit in the hammock, can't imagine the force needed to do this!

Sorry this happened to ya! Hope it can be fixed???

Nope it wasn't touching the tarp at all and no burr on tip of bar (which is what I thought caused it)
All I did was sit on side of hammock to enter and obviously the hammock will lean some and tore right through the tarp.( my weight went down more than outward)
It is a Spinn tarp so its thin and I had it taunt, but it should have never caused a 4" x 3" T shaped hole in my pride in joy tarp.

I wonder what I would get for a Warbonnet Big Mamajamba 132"x117" 10.75 oz Spinn UL 160.00 with a patch? I tell you what the Thermarest Patch kits work great!

BUMMER for sure! Spreader bars and problems with tarps have been much discussed here. I have had the spreaders rub against the tarp many times, including with the wind driving the tarp against the bars. But far as I can tell, I never had the least damage(Sil-Nyl tarps)

However, here is one way I totally solved that issue:

Notice that this is even with the tarp ends pretty much closed! ( but this was with JRB 11x10 rectangular tarp) I just put a grip clip at the ~ point where the bar rubs the tarp. Then take some light cord and run to a hiking pole and stake to ground, or better yet run it to a tree or tall bush. Works like a charm, gives plenty of clearance. Not only that, it makes the tarp roomier inside and makes it easier to get in the hammock without rubbing against a condensation soaked tarp.

Also, as you probably have already figured: There are ways to sit in the hammock- like way out on one edge- that drives the other end up higher (and into the tarp) than sitting down a little more towards the center.

Is Spin more easily punctured than Sil-nylon?
