Need ideas for hang in 40 degree F overnight

I have the HH Expedition but no underquilt yet and no under liner. Here is what I do have:
    foam pad
    big agnes inflatible pad
zero degree synthetic insulated sleeping bag
ll bean down 20 degree bag
20 degree synthetic insulated sleeping bag

Any ideas for a configuration that would keep me warm without too much bulk?

    Thanks in advance for responses!

My vote would be for the inflatable pad under you plus either sleeping bag on top. That should be sufficient... I've done temps well below 40º with an inflatable Multimat Superlite under me and a Jacks R Better Sierra Sniveller as a top quilt. In an emergency you could always go to ground with the inflatable pad and sleeping bag so you have a backup plan.

I can just barely fit on a standard 20" wide pad personally, but to avoid cold shoulders you might want an extra piece or two of foam pad or something similar across the shoulder area.

If the foam pad is a closed cell foam put it accross the hammock with the big agnes on top. You probably will need to shorted the foam pad. If it's "good" one Walmart has some for around $10-12. The cutoff makes a sit pad. You want the cross wise pad at your shoulders as that will be the widest point. Those hammock walls are COLD. ;-)
IF you sew look into a Segemented Pad Extender.

Is it an insulated Big Agnes pad? It probably makes a difference.

You could throw one bag under the hammock as a full sized under quilt and another for your top quilt. If you don't want to mod one of the bags to use as the UQ, or not sure which would work best you could hang it under like I did in this thread (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=38978) without modification and only a few extras to carry with you.

take the down SB, I find they're truer to their rating and it'll be lighter and not overkill like a 0degree synth. Pads underneath and you're ready to rock.. You probably wont want to fill the pad all the way so it keeps some flex in it.. maybe carry a CCF pad cut down to your torso size as a just in case you start gettin' CBS (cold butt syndrome).. should be a very light configuration and toasty.

    No. just an air mattress.

jasonjones - I love that setup you put together but i wont be able to get the shark clips in time.

Sounds like the concensus is ccf pad in sb with the air pad on top also in sb. Wish me luck that i dont get CBS (cold butt syndrome) - Thanks Slo

When I first got my hammock (before I had slept in it), I became fearful of CBS (almost to the point of obsession, being a wimpy, temperature sensitive Floridian ). I ended up not sleeping in the hammock until I was able to jerry-rig a sleeping bag under the hammock (with duct tape and parachute cord). I ended up massacring the bag and sewing (generous use of the word, btw) an underquilt. It worked, but I eventually replaced it with one and then two UQs. Mummy/sleeping bags have sufficed as topquilts until now, and eleven months later, I am just now getting into TQs, with my first to arrive in a week or two (I hope).

If you have a wool (Army style) blanket, try that under you in the hammock. It does not compress and will wrap around your shoulders well to keep you warm. Just keep in mind that it will take some shifting, adjusting and bouncing to get comfortable. I had to do this before I got my genuine UQ. The finagling will go away as you get a certifiable UQ and TQs.

    Follow Up!

So I went with the following set-up with great success at temps down to 40 degrees:

agnes air pad in synthetic zero degree sb and 3/4 length cc pad under sb

    Toasty warm and slept great!

And it seems my hammock enthusiasm has caught the attention of a friend who just purchased an eno double!

    Thanks to all!
