If you Google "Chinook tarp" a ton of places come up.

I'm looking at one for a "group shelter" kinda tarp for inclement weather when camping with a group.

I had a 12 x 12 Equinox that I previously used for this, but cannibalized for multiple projects - Jerry Chairs, gear hammocks, botched attempt at rain mitts, etc.

I didn't like the lack of multiple tieouts on the Equinox and the tieouts that it did have were huge metal grommets. So, I like the look of this tarp quite a bit because it seems to lack these downfalls.

How much of a cat cut is there on the edges? I prefer non-cat, but can take a litte.

Minimal amount of cat cut. Maybe 6 inches from center to the ends.

Tendertoe...my main dislike with the Chinook is that it could use more tie outs. The 12x9.6 has only 4 total along the long side, and just 3 along the short side. While it's enough to get the job done, a couple more on each side would be nice. Also it doesn't have a loop in the middle on the underside. I like to pass my ridgeline through a loop if it's there. There is a loop dead center on the top of the tarp. Maybe this year I'll change to a ridgeline over the top.

didnt mean that, exactly, i just looked for the tarp on a search and couldnt find it, but i like the looks,price and size, i'm a tall guy, 6'2", so i think i could rig this to stand up in and still be sealed off pretty well, thanks for the link too.....spike

I find it plenty large enough for 3 season use. I can completely close one end, with the other end 80% closed. The grommets along the long side are offset. The larger version would be nice for winter camping.

Music to my ears, that's EXACTLY why I got this tarp, the 12x14. I'm a poundhog and have a poly tarp, huge flame retardent poly tarp I thoughtI could hoof, but that 5lbs of tarp is crazy.. and it's probably more like 6 actually. Was hopin' this thing would be big enough butlight enough to get me through thewinter months. Appreciate your input on them buddy.

I can'tbelieve I never foundthem before as many searches as I'd done for tarps. This one looks like I'll be able to go with a generous closed a-frame which is a must have benefit for me in the winter, my wallet disagreed with me though, until this thing.

I read on an old thread that they are 1.82lbs, which seems heavy, but for the size I don't think silnylon would be ant, or much different.

Sol already said that he's a poundhog, so it won't be an issue, but if my math is right, sil would probably make for a roughly 17 or 18 ounce tarp. That's a significant difference if you care about weight. Still, for the price, it really can't be beat. Looking forward to hearing how it is.

Slo, those are good long lasting tarps. They are made of a heavier PU coated polyester I believe. This adds a good deal of weight and bulk, but also contributes better UV resistance than silnylon. Cheap, light and large...pick any two.
