To make sure I don't loose my Dutch Clips I hand sewed a knot (using waxed dental floss) on the webbing by the Dutch Clip so it can't fall out of the loop.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Is a soft shackle different than a Nacrabiner? I know they both do the same thing but is there a distinction in how they are made?

If you are not going to use a Dutch Clip on your tree hugger, you should just put one end of the tree hugger through the loop in the other end. No nacrabiner or loop shackle needed...

I removed my Dutch Clips and what remained was a tiny loop in the tree hugger, too small to pass the webbing through... so, I put a loop shackle in it. I just pass one end of the tree hugger through the loop shackle in the other end, as if it were the loop in the end of the webbing.

Shoulda kept the Dutch Clips, but I'm a gram weanie wannabe!

I'm using the soft shackle's now and find them very easy to use, there are soooo many great choices now that it's pretty hard to choose, as they all are great!!
(And I do own a set of "D" clips, just not the Biners "YET")

Red made my hands red something fierce. The green only bleeds a little on my fingers. Those are the only colors I've played with.

Does the name imply a difference or is it interchangeable?

    Soft Shackle?

    Nacrabiner?

The white one is about half the weight of the red one. Has any one done a load test comparison of the 2 designs?

The white one is easier to make, lighter, and easier to use. The red one looks cleaner and seems like it would support more.

Can it be a softshackle/nacrabiner if its not spliced? I've used smaller cord and formed a loop with a stopper knot then used a larkshead to attach it back to itself. Is that called something else?

As I understand it, the term "soft shackle" derives from the sailing world, where it was developed as a replacement for standard hardware shackles.

nacra533 introduced them to this forum as a gram-weenie replacement for carabiners. I coined the term 'nacrabiner' (a near anagram of carabiner, based on nacra's name) as a tip of the hat to nacra for making us aware of the technique.

Edit: here was the genesis of the term.

On this forum there arose several ways to make a soft shackle, as you note. Each instantiation could be given a different name, I suppose, if it really matters. At the time I coined the term 'nacrabiner', though, I meant no such distinction. If anyone wants to create a distinction, have at it!

It's kinda like the name "frawg"... there are lots of different frogs, including red, green, spotted, big and small frawgs, but we call all of them frawgs!
