I've thought about a differential cut dl, and it seems like it could be made to work. As Diva pointed out, accounting for stretch of the upper, weight bearing layer will be the tricky part. You might end up with a pile of diy hammocks on the road to success, but you would get there, eventually.

When I first started hanging, I slept on top of an unzipped bag rolled out inside the hammock...made a great little nest, although I never pushed temps with it.

Og and divab have me thinking... if you're trying to manage the stretch of the inner layer, why not make the outer much larger and use a series of elastic bands to keep the outer layer tight...

I've been thinking, too. The various people that have made insulated hammocks have bearded this lion...WV comes to mind, and I think JJ did one, but not sure.

I just sold my DIY double to a friend of mine, so I will be making another really soon. This thread has given me an idea, but I will hold off discussing it until I try it out. I have brought up enough dumb ideas here!

You got it! I hope my theory works in the practical world. It involves a material that I have not seen mentioned here at all.

My screen doors for submarines idea never panned out, but I have great hopes for this idea!

I think that the material used in the two layers is the same size but I don't think the bag compressed as much as it would if I were laying directily on it.
Maybe the need for room to "fluff" is not that critical.
Ding ding ding. I think this is the route I am going to take. I'll see how it works out. I'm going to run my bottom layer at 1/16 inch per ft longer than my top layer. After laying in my hammock and measuring it (bless my wife for doing that for me), it doesnt stretch hardly at all. So it goes to reason that this method would work for me IF I use a synthetic sleeping bag so the compression wont have as much affect on the insulation.

Thank you for posting this. You may have just solved my issue with this.

I also found a thread that had a similar idea.
