    Screwed by FL State Parks

Good news and bad are the order of the day.

The good first: I finally found a pot that'll work for me and some fuel. Going to be fine in the food department. Also, there's a wonderful BBQ place that's opened up in downtown here since my last visit. Good food, generous portions, and reasonable prices. It's a nice change from the Subway that used to be the only game in town.

Bad news: FL state parks screwed me. I called Fanning Springs a month ago to ensure that hammocks were okay in the primitive site there. They told me it'd be fine if I had 1" straps, for both my hammock and tarp. Of course, I brought both.

I called there today to be sure they had space in the site for tonight and tomorrow. It was fine right until I mentioned that I'd be using an hammock. Apparently, LAST Friday, FSP decided that the primitive site there was unsuitable for hammocks.

Also, some time between when I called a month ago and now, FSP decided that 2" straps are required; I discovered this when I called Manatee Springs, to see if perhaps THEY had a site. I don't mind following rules intended to provide space for folks to use for years to come, but I DO want them to be clear, unambiguous, and CONSISTENT.

So, Grinder and I are reevaluating the rest of the trip. I'm pretty pissed over this. I know that I probably should've made reservations earlier, but to arbitrarily change the status of a site after clearing it seems somewhat high-handed to me. Maybe I'm just overreacting, but that doesn't change my feelings about it. I don't think FSP will be getting any more of my money the near future.

Sorry to hear the news. I have written off Florida State Parks as a matter of principle long ago.

    General Good News

As it turns out, there's a campground just south of Old Town that allows hammocks. It looks like an RV park on the website, but apparently they've got tent sites and don't care if you use an hammock. So, we'll see how it goes. Worse comes to worst, I'll call Mrs. FLRider to come get us and sag the last day of the trip.

Here's hoping that the thunderstorms tomorrow aren't too bad...

More justification for my avoidance of state parks. I am sure next year they will require 3" straps and posts to be present, with an additional fee attached. I hope you guys don't let that ruin the fun. Learn to enjoy being screwed over, its part of the adventure.

Made it to the Old Town campground and RV park. It's definitely an RV park, but it's pretty and the owner doesn't have any problem with hammocks. It's got all of the amenities, and it sure ain't backcountry camping, but it's a place for the night. Think I'm going to explore the Nature Coast State Trail tomorrow...I had enough sitting around yesterday.

    Dunno...we'll see...

It sure is nice to see you both moving down the paved trail. Can't wait for all the pics to show up.

    Have a safe time.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

    Rainy Evening

It's a rainy night here at the campground. Had my stake pull loose twice out of the sand on the tent site. Wound up pulling the picnic table over to tie off to on that side, in the rain. Glad it's not going to get too cold tonight...that'd be a pain...
