"Each of us has an Up North. It's a time and a place far from the here and now. It's a map on the wall, a dream in the making, a tugging at one's soul. For those who feel the tug, who make the dream happen, who put the map in the packsack and go, the world is never quite the same." Sam Cook, Up North 1986

A few weeks ago I was trying to find time to make a CDT Gemini "winter" underquilt w/ clews before our Scout troop's "Klondike Derby" campout, and I thought I was going to have to pull an all-nighter working on it (wouldn't be the first time). Then I saw Spiguyver's & Dutch's reviews of the new Shell UQ. Thanks to Alex's excellent customer service & overnight shipping it arrived just in time for a basement setup on my Dream Hammock Sparrow the night before before the outing. BIG SHOUT-OUT TO ALEX!!!!
We were expecting the low temp overnight to be in the mid teens, so I stacked a 40* synthetic UQ inside it. It was super easy to stack; I just added mini biners to the inner UQ's shock cord suspensions & clipped them to a couple of the loops inside the Shell on each end. With my DIY double-layer Costco Down Throw "Frankenquilt", plus a few extra CDT's, I was ready!
Or, so I thought. Then the temp dropped below zero (about 20 degrees colder than we were expecting, MINUS 7F just before dawn). Fortunately I had also brought along a zero degree synthetic sleeping bag, just in case (Scout motto?), and the propane tank on my Coleman lantern hadn't frozen completely. I also had a Mister Buddy heater in the truck, but the heat from the lantern & the zero bag were sufficient to keep me comfortable until it was time to wake the boys up. (They were fine, stacked tight & toasty inside a big canvas tent.)
I'm VERY impressed with the Sheltowee Shell UQ so far. So much so that I'll likely also order a zero degree sometime before next season. I'm very excited to play with it some more & get some more "reasonable" overnights in it.

Enjoying my fall into the rabbit hole...
Would love to see something like this targeting UL long-distance hikers!

Could somebody please post a picture of a 20 degree in its compressed state? :-) thanks!
This may not help much... the provided stuff sack is 11Liters, which is oversized, and can compressed to about half that size
(also, average weight for these is 2lb 6oz these days)
