Question for those using mason twine or zing-it... That stuff is pretty thin and slick, how do you get prussicks to grip, and since prussicks are normally made form a line thinner than the main rope, what do you use?

Also, can you use a small figure nine with such a thin rope?

lizzie, the small metal figure 9's grip fine on the 2.2mm zing it or lash it. The 1.75 is just a hair to small to grip and hold.

1.75 prusiks grip fine on the 2.2 with 3 or 4 wraps. If you are using 1.75 on 1.75, a 3 wrap prusik will slip, IIRC, around 25-30 pounds. As the line gets worn in it will start to grip even better.

Thank you for your thoughtful response, Opie!

As it turns out, I just needed extra turns on the prusiks to work on the #18 braided mason twine. Actually, I found the Klemheist knot easier and grips better in the proper direction.

And the figure 9 grips well enough that I can tie a slippery half-hitch and it holds in place just fine.

Also look into a penburthy prusik.

someone told me that because Dyneema has a low melting point, prussik knots shouldnt be used incase they slip and melt under load?

he is a climber though so i guess it is more critical to go by the rules if hanging from some height.

does that sound right though? i could never see the prussik slipping but opted out on using them

If you are subjecting your hammock gear lines to the weight that would cause enough friction to be created to melt the line.....

A prusik slowing or stopping a fall will create magnitudes more friction than say a guy line or tarp line prusik.
