Ok, so we didn't actually hang on what's known as the snake road in Shawnee NF, just near it. My dad and I did hike it, however, and found all kinds of cool stuff. Warning: creepy crawly pictures below.
First, a friendly toad.
And a not-quite-so-friendly beetle.
And a colorful wasp.
Last bug pic, I promise.
Then we ran across this handsome fence lizard that posed for me.
Then his buddy, who was nice enough to let me get close.
First snake of the day; a gorgeous kingsnake! We ran into a group that had found this beauty.
From there, the findings picked up. This juvenile five-lined skink was just enjoying life.
This blue racer climbed a tree to escape us. They are exceptional climbers.
We actually found 4 of these guys; I'd never even found one around here before!
Then this black rat snake was crossing the road. Beautiful.
But my dad was not so excited (that's his hand)
After a few other findings, we turned in for the night. We didn't bring bug nets since the previous nights had been pretty chilly; that night only got into the 60's, and we were annoyed all night.
This was my first real trial of Dutch Flyz, and they are the fantastic. I had to retie my tarp several times to cover both hammocks, and it was no problem. It's hard for me to express my hatred for the slippery half hitch (especially on a family friendly site), so suffice to say I'm glad it's out of my life.
The next morning, we headed home on the back roads, where we found even more cool stuff, most notably this stunning eastern box turtle.
The patterning on the shell is just ridiculous.
It was a great trip, despite the buggy sleep. Thanks for tolerating my pics eating up your bandwidth.
