    $200 Challenge

After taking a friend camping this past weekend and setting her up in my HH Hyperlite I have made a believer out of her (big surprise right?). She has now set aside $200 to get outfitted. She has a SB she can use for now and since bug seasons about over we're gonna hold off on the bugnet. That means I have $200 to find her a hammock, tarp and UQ (she doesn't want pads).

Here's what I came up with real quick last night. I'm open to input for better options.

Hammock: Tablecloth hammock, suspension provided me. $12-20
Tarp: WL Tadpole, cordage provided by me. $85
UQ: AHE Jarbridge, foot pad provided by me. $100

I plan to have her try my GTUL and see if she likes the smaller hammock. But that still keeps the hammock price the same. She doesn't wanna go too cheap on the tarp so no poly tarps or Guide Gear tarps (I've heard there tend to be issues with those).

I think the Kelty Noah is a little cheaper (by ~$20 or more depending on which version you get) which would give more money for the other aspects.

I thought about that one but is crazy heavy in comparison. $20 for over a lb of weight savings is worth it. Unless of course she can't go over $200 at all, then I'll hafta find some savings to cover shipping for the various items. Weight isn't a major issue but it's something I'm definitely keeping in mind. Thanks for the suggestion.

Check out some of the offerings from simplylightdesigns.com . Jared's got some good looking tarps of various sizes and designs, plus some prototypes for sale. . And, the Streamliner hammock is a pretty good deal if you can set her up with the suspension.

    Looks like a decent start.

    A Chinook 12 x 14 would knock $20 off the cost and the 12 x 9.6 would knock $40 off the cost.

What type of outings does she plan to do? Aka, car camping? Back packing? How cold does she plan to camp?

DIY hammock is a good start.

WL Tadpole is fairly small - make sure she's ok with the coverage. Sometimes our female companions want a bit more privacy, or at least the ability to have privacy when needed. Also, don't count out urethane coated if not planning to backpack. They can be more durable, and significantly cheaper for more coverage.

UQ - this is when planned camping type and temp range comes into play. A super cheap, warmer weather UQ would be a poncho liner under quilt. Mine is good to about 55 for me with minimal base layers. The Jarbridge looks like a good synthetic option for colder temps.

Is she crafty at all? you could point her towards DIY if she doesn't need everything right away. You could easily do a hammock, sil tarp, and synthetic UQ for under $200.

    under $200

Someone may have one of these tarps who will sell it. It's a little heavy but the price is right. I bought one for my son to use. Needed it in a hurry. $26.95 I believe. Ditched the poles, seam sealed it, made his own ridgeline. Worked perfectly. I may even have an extra one that I didn't give away as a gift. PM if interested.

A PLUQ would save some some money for guylines and other accessories.

The Hennessey Hex tarp is pretty affordable and gives great coverage.
