I know these posts are old, but I used to use these things without issue. However, I don't know why you'd want to cut a notch - yes, I would think it would weaken it - when they sell them as caribiners.
For what is worth now (not much perhaps), I always "clipped" the 9 to my straps and adjusted with the HH line which fit well in the large 9 - opposite of what is shown in pic. Never a problem, although it was only a handful of times before I switched to whoopies.
