Fixing a hole in a tarp

Okay so my Kelty Noah 12 got a small rip in it when an ice storm hit our area.
It isn't really a hole but a slit, but it does compromise the waterproofnes of it and the strength.
So I saw a video of a guy that took some box tape and put it over the rip on the inside, then on the outside took some silicone and pasted it over the rip and let it dry, then redid it for the other side.

Should I do this or just put a patch over it then seam seal it. Suggestions welcome.

A similar thing happened to me. I just took a smaller patch of silnylon and sewed it on, then seam sealed it. Worked on fine so far. I hope I did the right thing!

Neighbor dog tore a hole in one of mine. Not big and not in a critical area like near a pull out or seam. I put Gorilla tape on both sides of the hole two years ago and it's till holding fine Not pretty but it works.

What material is the tarp made from? PU coated tarps take a different sealant the silnylon tarps.

It is 75d Polyester. The guy in the video was repairing a DD 3x3 tarp which is also Polyester.

I'd use Mcnett's seam grip since it's polyester. Sew the patch on then seal it or if it's small, use the seam grip to stick the patch in place.

+1 on the Gorilla tape.. I've got a cheap Yukon tarp that's being held together by Gorilla tape and prayers (we may as well call it a duct tape tarp at this point)

    What happened to the dog?

I'm still deciding on sewing a patchon or just doing what the guy in the video did.
