    "I started before you"

I've ran into 3 separate people out in the woods now where it seemed like their mission in life was to let you know they started hammocking before "it was cool". Casually saying "I haven't used my tent in 5 years" or "I love hanging; I've been doing it for 4 years now" is what I would expect. But these people just seemed almost annoyed that others "copied" them.

Has anyone else ran into this? I don't care either way. It was just an observation, possibly shared with many other hobbies to be honest.

(yeah yeah yeah, HYOY and all that crap inserted here )

I started last Father's Day - benefited tremendously from all of the knowledge accumulated on this forum and high tech materials that are coming out, so pretty good timing from my perspective!

We typically don't run into anyone when we are out on the trail (Yay for seclusion!) However I have found among the "hipster" or the trendy "in" crowd, during normal conversation about camping it comes up a lot. To be fair the biggest joke about hipsters is that they were always "Into (insert activity here) before it was COOL." I never run into a 40+ year old that says stuff like that. It tend to be those trying to establish their "hipster cred" with others. Most that I hear from car camp 3 to 4 times a year. Many that are college age think that putting and ENO Doublenest between trees, stretched as tight as a piano wire, on Campus for 2 hours at a time is the qualification for being a real trend setting hammocker since it is out in public. Being seen in public and being able to say "I did it before it was cool" seems to float their boat. Every so often we meet the real deal with all the cottage gear and trappings too.

I am with you Markr6. Whatever tickles their pickle. I take no issue with it. I do notice it. It then makes me smile and reminds me that I may have come down with an early case of the Grumps as I think of those "darn kids".
