    First Post

    Hello folks,
Just got my HH Exped Asy Classic

I think that I have it set up correctly per the instruction sheet & several U Tube vids

After I get inside & get into the correct diagonal, left tie out between shoulder & elbow. The area where the Velcro closure is seems to be sticking up like 3 inches. Almost like there is not enough material to allow the entire Velcro closure to relax enough to be flat. Quite uncomfortable

LMK if you think something is incorrect in my set up

    tks

What was the nature of your discomfort?
    Not flat enough?
    Shoulder squeeze?
    Calf ridge pressure?
Foot closest to edge scrunched inward?
Some one who has your same hammock might be able to help---especially if you can describe what is happening with some detail.
What are the dimensions of your hammock?
I'm sure someone here can help and if not you can always call the manufacturer.
    Good luck outsider347

I've got the same hammock. Feel free to PM me or post specific questions here, preferably with photos which help a lot in diagnosis from afar.

    Some thoughts and questions :

What you describe sounds like calf ridge. It can be mitigated but I've never managed to totally eliminate it in my HH exped.

How tall are you? The Expedition is best, in my opinion, for people 5'10" or less. Hennessy says 6' but I think that's too tall for that hammock. I'm 5'9".

Have you measured, with real numbers, your hang angle? Download one of the many free clinometer apps and check the angle of the suspension. Even if you don't measure it, try different angles from very flat to very slanted and see if the feel of the hammock changes.

Experiment. Hammocks have a huge fiddle factor. There's a lot you can try differently which also means there's a lot to learn, especially the nuances.

I think "calf ridge" best describes it

I slept in it first time last night. Not being a back sleeper, as folks here say "takes a bit of getting used to"
Had some cold spots, as expected. Spent a good bit of time chasing my 3/4 Thermarest inflatable. Next I'll try my full length Big Agnes....1/2 inflate as suggested

Is the calf ridge problem because my Hammock is the HH classic with the Velcro entrance in the floor?
    Can I fix it?

Slept pretty well, Hope I can find a solution to "calf ridge"
    Thanks Gents

I'll fiddle with it today to try to get the leg area flatter

    Ed,

I have a couple of HH (Explore and Expedition) and can say for certain the issue is not because of the Velcro. I would suggest you do some experimenting with your configuration. I found that if my trees are too close together I get a calf ridge issue even though the hang is what HH describes as correct. When I found some trees about 18 to 20 feet apart and did the exact same hang, the calf ridge went away or about 99% of it did.

I think you are hanging it too tight. Mine works best with about 3 inches of sag in the ridgeline when I hang it (empty). When I'm in it the ridgeline isn't tight - straight but not tight.

Try it without using the side tie-outs - I seldom tie out the foot end; I usually just tie out the head end.

old pappy I think that you hit it for me.
Did my RL pretty tight, per something that I saw on U Tube
    So next set up
    1. 3 in ridge line sag
    2. trees about 20 ft apart

Is the "calf ridge " issue unique to the HH Classic, bottom entry?

Side zip models have the calf ridge problem?

All gathered end hammocks can (you notice can not does) have the issue. Mostly you have to tweak your hang. Also hang your feet about 6" +/- higher than your head.
