    Talking a dog hammock backpacking

I have a chocolate lab that is about 3 years old and very obedient. I would like to take her backpacking with me and my wife but don't know what to do with her at night. Any experience out there?

This comes up every week or two around here. There are dozens of good thread. But basically just set your dog up to lie on the ground below you, or in the hammock with you. Like was mentioned above Fronkey has a video or two on the topic.

i carry my scottie "dewey" with me on every trip. he's about 7 months old.

at night, he's on his own. that is; i carry a pad, or something for him to lay on under the hammock. sometimes he's on it, and other times he's chasing demons. we've made about 15 trips this fall and winter.

he's peg-legged, so running off isn't a real risk in the terrain we inhabit; mountain tops with lots of forrest litter, rocks and such.

for a long-legged dog like a lab, i would think it's up to the training and the dog's habits; some will wander, some won't.

I rescued an abandoned pup last May. After getting his shots and getting him "chipped" and healthy, he's been on six backpacking trips with me. I carry a Z-rest pad, folded in half, with a Permethrin-treated fleece cover, for him to sleep on under my hammock. On winter nights, I have a coat for him and chemical warmers go under the fleece. On first trips, I leashed him at night, but later on tried it without leashing him and he stayed put. He's about 75 lbs and too big to be in the hammock with me. But he loves going on these trips. Gets excited when I get out his saddle bags! He happens to be a great trail dog. Not all are.

Photos are an October '15 trip on the Art Loeb Trail in NC. One is on the ride over in my little pick-up truck (not me driving) and the two of us on Black Balsam Knob, when some babies wanted to play with him.

My 70lb pitbull goes in the hammock with me during colder weather, underneath me in warmer weather. If you're going to keep him tied underneath, consider some sort of bungee attachment to the hammock suspension; it's a pain waking up to untangle them every couple hours if the lead is too long.

My wife made our dog (Golden) his own little tent that has a thicker floor. The peak of the tent has a piece of bungy cord that connects to the suspension so that if he rolls or or w/e it doesn't collapse. He does fine with it, and in colder weather we put down a foam floor to insulate him from the ground. He also has his own "dog snuggy" - think fleece cloak - that adds to his own insulation (fur).
