Top Quilt for AT thru hike

Any one out there have a recommendation for a good (read affordable) top quilt for long distance backpacking? I will be making this trip on with my wife and we will be on the ground on a pad so I will need something that can work for that. I'll also want to be able to use it in my hammock when I am on my own.

    A little bit more information.
I am 6'1 with a large frame. I sleep warm.

Do you want it to cover you and her or one per? When are you starting the hike? A typical through hike will require multiple quilts due to the weather changes.

It'll just cover me. We will be starting in the middle of March. I was thinking I would use a liner to supplement the temperature rating and switch to when it was too hot.

I just picked up a Jacks R Better Sierra Sniveler. I wouldn't call it "affordable", but it's priced competitive with other quilts. It has a velcro hole in the center that you can open, and put your head through, and wear it as a Mexican style serape on cold mornings around camp. It's rated for about 20 degrees or so.

Honestly, any cottage made top quilt would suit your needs just fine. The problem will be the changes in temps. A 20 degree quilt would work well in March April and may, and then again in fall, but would be pretty warm for summer.

    Check out these:
    Underground Quilts
    Enlightened Equipment
    Hammock Gear
    Jacks R Better
    Wilderness Logics
    Loco Libre Gear
    (I'm sure there's others I forgot).

If you want to save some money, you can get a synthetic quilt that's a little heavier and not as compressible, but better in very wet conditions. Arrowhead equipment and Loco Libre makes them, and for the price, you could buy a cold weather and warm weather top quilt from arrowhead for about the same as a single cold weather quilt from many other places.

starting where? Going to where? The AT is pretty long, and March in GA is way different than March in MA

Just food for thought but affordable and light for hiking don't really work together. You can have one or the other but IMO, you can't find both together.

I have a Jack R Better Old Rag Mountain. It is a very versatile piece of gear. It can be used as a TQ, UQ (with suspension), or I use it all the time with my Synmat pad when I am family camping and can't use a hammock. Is it cheap? No.

    As they say
    Pick 2:
    Good
    Fast
    Cheap

If it's good and cheap, it won't be fast.
If it's good and fast, it won't be cheap.

Regardless of which quilt you choose, since you are on the ground I suggest a wide width to help avoid drafts. Affordable is kind of a vague term. Are looking for something on the cheap like a synthetic, or just affordable down?

Plus one on the Sierra sniveller. Owned one for years and the draw string foot box makes it comfortable in hot and cold weather.

Give a man enough ripstop and he'll hang himself.
