First I'll post the packing list and what the plan is:

Something I have wanted to do for a couple of years now is try to get my base pack weight for a trip below 5 pounds. I've done it before, but it was what I would call "survival light" - I got that term from Chef Paul over at Etowah Outfitters. It wasn't much fun.

My personal challenge is to create such a list but it had to include 5 things:

    1. A hammock
    2. Music
    3. Cigars
    4. Hot food
    5. Bourbon

And any other luxury I could slip in. I also wanted it to have things a hiker wants to have like a camera, notepaper for journals, and something to do in camp. This packing list needs to be more than what you need to get by.

Ground rules: pack base 5 pounds or less. To avoid pocket stuffing to make weight, clothing worn and stuff carried cannot exceed pack weight. Like the last time I did this, you only have to count container weights on consumables. So TP, Deet, and whatever figure like this. And EVERYTHING gets a weight. If you take meds, wear classes, have jewelry, it all counts.

So here is where I stand:

Of course this list is for summer down here around the Smokies or the Cherokee forest somewhere.

I was over until recently when I got the Hammock Bliss pack and made the "Sleep like a Rock" SUL Hammock. I'm still thinking bug solution and may want to add a pad piece for under the butt and shoulders.

I'll be posting some pics soon.

I was talking to a guy who was operating along the Congo river and used thiamine patches to keep the mosquitoes at bay. He swears by them. I am going to try thiamine for repelling mosquitoes this spring. I will try megadosing the thiamine orally first, and if that doesn't work, I'll try the patches. I don't know if you have heard of this practice, but maybe you could use this along with a head net and save some weight?

P.S.: Permethrin on the hammock has worked very well for me. No attacks from below!

I've heard of eating match heads or food with lots of garlic.

The garlic thing works better on vampires.

    The pictures

For now I'm calling it the "Sleep like a Rock" SUL hammock. Here are the pictures. Nothing very innovative or impressive:

Here is the hammock without a load. It's 1.1 ounce bargain bin fabric at 3 yards by 1.5 yards with 3mm accessory cord for supports and mason twine for whipping and side tie outs.

Here is the whipping and attachment. Whipping. The end is whipped about 3 inches from the end of the fabric with mason twine, then the support line is added with a double sheet bend. Finally I added a piece of 550 cord shell to the outside for extra protection and friction.

This is one of the four tie outs. The bottom is too narrow to do a cross lay with asym tie outs, so I wanted the sleeping area more "defined". Side tie out is black nylon ribbon with mason twine strings.

Here is it under load. It took a few times getting in it to work out that initial stretch, but now there isn't much left in it. Not a whole lot of room to move around. The side tie outs don't really do much at this point.

Size compared to a small coke bottle. It isn't stuff tight either. The bag is made out of mosquito net.

Weigh 152 grams or 5.37 ounces.

Sarge - If you haven't seen the whipping method used in the Warbonnets, check out this info from headchange4u.

It creates a very comfy hammock and seems very secure.

For this wouldn't you need to sew a channel in the hammock fabric? I'm worried that this stuff is so light that it would just create a place for the fabric to tear.

Since I always wear a hat, I'd make the net hammock bag a bit bigger and then use it as a headnet when hammock is up and the mosquitos are bugging me.

The channel and mason line just form a bulb like bulk for the suspension line to snug up against. The Warbonnet Blackbird, which uses this method, comes in 1.1oz and is rated up to 185#. If it were prone to wear and failure we'd probably be hearing about it.

Maybe others who have a Blackbird can comment. I've used this method for two hammocks I made, a single and a double layer 1.10z. With 6' whoopies and ridgeline my single 1.1 weighs just 8.9oz, but it's almost 4yds long and the fabric is full width (little short of 6'?).

Both are too new to comment on durability.

    Hi,

Are you going to do a hike with your "below 5 pounds" gear list. I think something like going from Springer to Fontana Dam on the AT or BMT would conform your light gear list.

If you plan a hike and the time was right I might be able to come up to GA / TN and do the hike with you. Using Cuben Fiber has made it really easy for me to go SUL.
