    Easy, no-splice soft shackle!

BEWARE: this OF COURSE lowers the rating of the rope! Don't trust it unless you're willing to fall! (I'd use it but what do I know)

For those looking for quick & easy, or are afraid of splicing:

Cool way to make a soft shackle.

Yeah, right. Not gonna happen on my rig - I need Amsteel downrated by 80% like a hole in the head. I consider the source when looking at this setup.

I've made and used those before but of course I'm willing to take the risks.

It's still rated to more then 100% of the strength of a single line due to the 2 strands.

A diamond knot on this setup would result in about a 2000 pound breaking limit. Button knot, close to 4000 pounds. I'd expect this to be closer to 1600. No or very little derating at all when 2 lines used compared to a single.

Now if you used this like a cont loop rather then a soft shackle.... diff story. Dont do that.

There should be very little concern about breakage. Using 7/64" the min certified breakage strength from the manufacturer (assuming Sampson Rope) is 1400 lbs. Doubling the line provides a 2800lbs capacity. Stopper knots like a figure 8 knot will derate the line by ~30% so even at the knot end the load rating minimum would be in the neighborhood. of 1960 lbs.

The concern is not breakage. The concern would be, this type of knot can invert under load allowing the bite line to slip over the knot as it rolls. Or simply the bite coming loose from knot.

Indeed. The knot needs to be loaded and tightened properly before any valuable load is put on it. Same is true for button (esp so in my experiance) and diamond.

This looks very similar to the Phantom Soft Shackle with the difference being a diamond knot is used, not a double overhand.

Saw this yesterday. Jeff knows his Amsteel and is very inventive. Wouldn't hesitate in the least to use any of the variations he showed in the video. Also, for those "worried" about using this as suspension, keep in mind that it's a hammock at sitting height. No one is suggesting it be used as a safety on a cliff face 100' in the air. But, HYOY.

I would for sure use the 2nd method (similar to EVO) he shows. Not too keen on the first method.
