I am splurging on a luxury item and getting a pillow to use in the back country. I am sick of sleeping on extra clothes and inflated platy bottles.
So for those pillow users, do you prefer a small "normal" pillow, or a neck pillow?

The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.
I like the small normal pillow I use under my neck, the shape allows me to easily position it differently if I lay on my side. It really is a luxury though for me, I sleep quite well without it as well.

While I don't "have" to have one, a small pillow is my luxury item.
I am still 18 but with 53 years of experience !
my preference for pillow fill is synthetic as it doesn't compress much.
a synth. pillow will support my neck and head w/o a bunch of fluffing and folding.
my pillow of choice is from Wilderness Logics.
it's always comfortable and nothing but sweet dreams!

and that even the smallest Thermarest pillow filled with chunks of soft foam is too thick. So I opened a seam and removed almost half of the chunks. Perfect! BTW, I am a side sleeper, so one would expect me to need a thicker pillow, but with the up-curve of the hammocks I do not.

After initially trying a neck pillow, I found that it did not contour to the contours of the hammock as well as a small "normal" pillow.
+1 on what Jsaults said.
Snoring Bear Down Pillow from Arrowhead Equipment is the best! Pillow is exactly the right loft and size. It comes with a shock cord that snaps to the RL which keeps it in the hammock even at pack up time.
Best $30 I've spent!
I use a medium thermarest pillow, which is probably bigger than most use. I suspect different hammocks could allow different pillows. I use a fairly firm latex pillow at home, and find I can get comfortable side , back or reading position with the medium in my jungle hammock. For me, anything which compresses smaller would be too soft.
I have used a medium sized thermorest pillow for the last 3-4 years. It has recieved a fair amount of use but it feels somewhat chunky and the outer cover feels sort of...gross...like it has been accumulating all of my sweat. I like the looks of the Underground Quilts down pillows...I may bite the bullet and splurge on one.
Erm,...you're scaring me a little. You do know you can toss them in the washing machine?
Please tell me you have been.
